I Have A Voice (2020) is a body of work created as part of Gala Jane’s final year of studies at University. She has created 27 individual face masks made from discarded bra cups, embroidered with text representing different issues. She has taken each mask and created individual self-portrait photographs that are raw and powerful giving agency to the physical objects.

This piece of feminist activist art critically exposes the patriarchal ideologies in our society, expresses the artist’s positivity in change through empowerment of situations familiar to women. As well as progressively showing a better world, free of sexism and the patriarchy where women can be free to walk the streets without fear.

Her work is there to question, call out, educate, and be relatable by taking objects shrouded in secrecy and privacy and placing them front and centre where the viewer cannot miss them. But most of all her work is there to empower women, to show them that they are not alone in this battle.

All original works from this series were destroyed in the Lismore 2022 floods. RIP.
